Foxy Brown

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Rampant amorality and sensationalist flourishes give this crime thriller a rich coat of grime, but Foxy Brown's powerful center lies in Pam Grier's commanding performance.

Foxy Brown | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Noel Murray The Dissolve As handled by Hill, the sensationalistic elements seem both natural and marginal. Grier as Foxy would be fun to watch even if she kept her clothes on and her claws in. Rated: 3/5 Jun 8, 2015 Full Review Foxy Brown | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Jerry Renshaw Austin Chronicle This is fun action sleaze from the classic era of drive-in blaxploitation films, driven by the no-nonsense direction of Jack Hill, and did well enough at the box office to help put the still-gorgeous Pam Grier on the map. Don't miss it. Mar 13, 2007 Full Review Foxy Brown | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Barbara Scharres Chicago Reader The film is dated, but its mixed message -- and its potential to offend virtually everyone -- still makes it a powerful discussion starter. Mar 13, 2007 Full Review Foxy Brown | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand There’s plenty of sex, a catty girl-fight that leaves the losers topless, and car chases and shoot-outs galore and Hill’s gritty low budget action scenes are marked by visceral, wincing violence. Aug 19, 2023 Full Review Foxy Brown | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Sean Burns Crooked Marquee Half-remake, half-victory lap, the film was originally intended as a sequel titled 'Burn, Coffy, Burn!' hastily re-written in ways that don't always entirely make sense, showcasing a more playful side of the star's screen persona. Mar 19, 2022 Full Review Foxy Brown | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid As ever, Hill's potent direction and Grier's impressive screen presence bring this one home, and it was a hit. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 13, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Watchable , campy, and often brutal tale of revenge. Contains a surprising amount of gore. Pam Grier is all kinds of awesome. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review Dallas H Pam Grier is an icon in the Blaxploitation genre. Everyone knows it! This movie is as good of a popcorn flick as any other. In hindsight, it's a bit cheesy here and there, but that's okay. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Brent A 60% rating ... Pam Grier definitely shines in this film. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/06/23 Full Review Michael W This action movie was great. Pam Grier, Kathryn Loder, Antonio Fargas, Peter Brown, Terry Carter, and the rest of the cast did a great job in this movie. The plot of the movie was action-packed, thrilling, and dramatic. It's about taking revenge on dirty people in a dirty way. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's worth watching. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review William L As far as blaxploitation films go, there are quite a few that have Foxy Brown beat for creativity, impact, and cultural relevance. Much of the acting is poor quality (yes, even from Pam Grier), the story isn't particularly creative (a quickly rewritten Coffy sequel adapted for a supposedly original character), and the film definitely leans more toward pulpy action rather than commentary. Even among films of its genre and period, Foxy Brown attracted particular condemnation and discussion for its sexuality, violence, and stereotypical depictions of black culture. But a woman tells Foxy that she's "got a black belt in karate", after which Grier hits her in the face with a barstool. So I can hardly rate this one lower than three stars. (3/5) Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/16/22 Full Review Audience Member (Pam Grier at her best)Pam Grier stars as Foxy Brown who gets revenge from the mob after her former government agent boyfriend is gunned down and killed. This movie is one of the best films of the 1970s. The directed did well directing the cast and the action. The script is amazingly written and if this movie didn't get any golden globes or Oscars, including academy awards it should have. The story is very well told the music score has great action tunes and sets everything up for the action scenes. This movie is a little graphic in the nudity category but it's not as bad as the R rated movies made now a days. This is one of the movies that came out when my parents were kids and this is a great movie to pass down to younger generations when they become adults. This movie is very entertaining and I enjoyed everything that this me gave me, a great story, edge of your seat action scenes and the question what is gonna happen next. Greatly made and I recommend it for everyone to watch. This is just as good as the first movie I saw her in which was, Jackie Brown which is directed by Quentin Tarantino.Written byBailey GianniniMovie buff and amateur online movie/tv critic Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
